Associate Director for DEI
The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study (https://hbcdstudy.org/) is a large, NIH-funded, 27-site nationwide, longitudinal study of 7,200 mother-child dyads designed to prospectively examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social and emotional development of children beginning prenatally through ages 9-10 years. The HBCD Study will determine the impact of maternal and child exposures on short- and long-term development of children. Since its launch in 2021, HBCD has placed a priority on integrating principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across every aspect of the study. However, there is an identified need to organize these efforts under the leadership of a dedicated Associate Director for DEI serving within the HBCD Consortium Administrative Core (HCAC).
The Associate Director for DEI will ensure and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of HBCD by evaluating practices and culture and by effecting change to meet DEI objectives for the study. The Associate Director will be responsible for setting and executing the overall strategy for DEI across the consortium as well as co-leading the specific activities that are assigned to the DEI committee. The DEI Committee is responsible for a) ensuring that DEI principles are considered and applied within our measures and methods and across the organizations and universities affiliated with HBCD; b) ensuring that DEI principles are applied with respect to HBCD study participants and HBCD study staff; c) ensuring that HBCD data are used and interpreted with the utmost integrity and in a way that prevents further stigmatization, marginalization, or injustice to individuals; and d) promoting DEI principles in facilitating professional development opportunities for investigators, staff and trainees affiliated with HBCD. The DEI Committee, led by the Associate Director for DEI, will invite and engage with HBCD leadership to enhance awareness and set a platform for all to engage in processes necessary for institutional change.
For this position, we seek a strong leader who will be integral in guiding the HBCD Consortium in achieving our DEI goals. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of leadership experience, demonstrated scientific expertise in DEI, experience in addressing DEI issues in a research setting, and will have or will acquire extensive knowledge about the HBCD Study. This opportunity will provide salary support for between 20-50% effort up to the NIH cap, as appropriate. Additional resources for administrative and other needs for the position will be made available.
